While Eddie Brock as Venom, one of Spidey's greatest enemies from the comics, gets something of a short shrift in the conclusion to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films, the scene where Brock and the symbiote find each other is a fantastic moment in the movie. Having been exposed as a fraud, Brock has lost his job for the Daily Bugle and his 'girlfriend' Gwen Stacey, all thanks to Peter Parker. Brock is praying in church - for the death of Parker - when he hears Peter screaming in the bell tower above, trying to free himself from the alien symbiote he has been using as a new costume. He succeeds but the symbiote drops below and ensnares Eddie. Feeding on his anger for Peter, it and Eddie Brock merge to become... Venom! The characterisation of Brock and Venom are criticised but there's no fault with the design of the character, being a glorious adaptation of the villain from the page. The black gloop of the comics is transformed to a stringy web-like substance that lurks and crawls like a spider. Inspired by the comics but brave enough to add finesse and sharpen the source material, this scene alone is a perfect introduction to the Anti-Spidey, Venom, even though reaction to the character elsewhere in the film has been somewhat... venomous.
