El Pepe tells the story of José "Pepe" Mujica, a former guerrilla freedom fighter, left-wing activist and president of Uruguay from 2010-2015. The film aims to uncover the leader's true character, a man described as "the world's humblest head of state".

Filmmaker Emir Kusturica gains unprecedented access to El Pepe in the final years of his presidency, following him around as he goes about his daily business and getting him to tell his life story.

Despite being Uruguay's president, Mujica maintains a surprisingly normal life. Living in modest accommodation, he farms his own land, drives a vintage VW Beetle and gives a large portion of his salary to charity.

El Pepe: A Supreme Life is a compelling study of a charming and peculiar politician.
