15 Highest Grossing Movies Of The Decade: Ranked Worst To Best
5. Frozen
Worldwide Box Office: $1.276 billion
All-Time Ranking: #9
2010s Ranking: #7
Most of the high grossing movies from the past few years earned the biggest chunk of the takings in their opening weekend - that's what blockbusting wide releases are made to do - and while Frozen's biggest week was indeed its first, it defied convention to have serious box office legs, earning more on its fourth and fifth week of release than it did in its second and third. This was a movie driven by hype; an animation from a newly on-the-rise Disney guaranteed a massive return, but the extent of its long-term success is down to the movie's singular brilliance (and, in particular, the catchiness of its songs).
A subversion of the Disney formula (particularly in reference to its presentation of gender roles) while still hitting all the key notes, Frozen plays it straight and smart, meaning that while kids delight in the same charm that has made the company's name, adults find a commentary on our changing times (as well as the charm that has defined the company's name).
As I discussed earlier this week, there's been a pretty remarkable backlash against the film, with the phrase "overrated" getting banded around an awful lot. The real problem is overexposure; step away from the constant playing of Let It Go and you have one of Disney's best.
