6. The Revenant

Deadpool movie
Regency Enterprises

Ranking: #12

Earnings: $532,950,503

The reason everyone went to see this one is because it was widely touted as the film that would finally win Leonardo DiCaprio that elusive Oscar, which it eventually did. He is fantastic in this movie and the Oscar was well-deserved.

While it's a movie marketed around Leo's Oscar campaign, the rest of the film is an extraordinary experience. The Revenant seems to have been a somewhat divisive film since release, but it is a very impressive work, although it's not particularly enjoyable.

It's essentially pain porn; it's two and a half hours of Leo struggling through a horrifying wilderness in complete agony and it's incredibly painful to watch. Early on there's the now-infamous bear attack scene and while that's horrifying enough, the film gets no less intense from that point forth.

It's not really a story-based film and is instead a sensory experience; looking at it on that level, it is an undeniably powerful experience with some stunningly beautiful cinematography from the ever-brilliant Emmanuel Lubezki.

It's too long, it contains one of Tom Hardy's weaker performances and you're unlikely to watch it again, but you should definitely see it once.
