This is the highest-grossing horror film of all time. Is this deserved? Hell yes.
It is a jolly good scare-fest and definitely one of the best studio horror films of the decade. It doesn't quite live up to Stephen King's novel, but since that's a 1300-page book that's arguably too big to render properly on the big-screen, that's perfectly understandable. In regards to the TV film, this trumps that on literally every single level.
Aside from dips here and there and a disappointing CGI-ridden finale, this is a very impressive thriller. It's great to see a studio horror film that's both genuinely scary and refreshingly adult, but it's the cast and characters that take this to the next level.
The young cast is genuinely great, Bill Skarsgard is terrifying as Pennywise and the screenplay brings the friendship between the young characters brilliantly to life and makes for a very believable, touching and occasionally hugely funny coming-of-age story. In fact, the film might be a good horror film but it's even better as a drama.
It's easily the best Stephen King movie since 2007's The Mist and will definitely be remembered as one of the best in general.
