After the success of Deadpool, the studio decided to aim for an R-rating for the third solo Wolverine film, which marks Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine. This was a fantastic decision since not only did it finally show Wolverine's kills in a suitably gory fashion, but it also allowed the film to be one of the most intense, powerful and dark superhero movies ever.
It is an intensely depressing and borderline harrowing movie with many seriously upsetting moments, but it is a truly stunning work that is definitely the best film of the already strong X-Men franchise (Deadpool 2 is in second place).
It's not always easy to watch, but it's really worth the effort. Filled with brutally intense action, hauntingly powerful storytelling and Oscar-worthy performances from Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, this takes the superhero genre to new levels of complexity, darkness and soulfulness.
As a film that will make grown men sob, as one of the best superhero movies of the decade and as one of the richest and bravest blockbusters ever, this is highly deserving of its IMDb Top 250 placement.
