15 Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
10. American Sniper
Ranking: #11
Earnings: $547,426,372
This war drama was an astonishingly successful sleeper hit at the box office and by far one of the highest-grossing January releases ever. Since January movies are usually so awful, it's also one of the better January movies of recent times.
American Sniper is far from perfect. The transitions between different scenes and locations are clumsy, it occasionally feels superficial and it's not always historically accurate, but this is still a good Oscar-Bait movie. Bradley Cooper is superb, Clint Eastwood's direction is excellent and it's a movie which successfully mixes tense war scenes with sobering depictions of the effects of war on soldiers.
Best of all, this avoids feeling too much like pro-American propaganda, which is a trap some American war movies have fallen into. It shouldn't have been nominated for Best Picture or Best Adapted Screenplay (there were many other more deserving films that year), but it is still worth your time and makes for a suspenseful, moving viewing.
It's not one of the top-tier R-rated box office hits, but it's certainly not on the lower tier either.
