15 Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
9. Ted
To this day, Seth Macfarlane's crude comedy about a foul-mouthed, drug-taking, womanizing talking teddy bear is still the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time. But does it deserve such lofty success? Overall, yes.
The idea of the badly-behaved stoner teddy bear is a great premise and the film does manage to get a lot of laughs out of it. Seth MacFarlane's screenplay is, on the whole, very funny and there are many huge laughs to be had, while his vocal performance as Ted is also strong. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, as the human leads, provide good back-up as well.
Unfortunately, Ted is a one-joke film and, as a result, the film does not endure repeat viewings at all. Like many other comedies, it also takes a misguided shift into action towards the end and becomes less funny as it goes along.
Ted does have a great central concept but you need more than one good joke to sustain a feature-length movie. It was fun at the time, but Ted hasn't had a long shelf-life and its tedious sequel also makes one feel less warm towards this in retrospect.
