15 Horror Movies You Really Shouldn't Watch Alone
7. Sinister (2012)
Sinister is probably the most conventional horror film on this list, and while it's a pretty modest, low-fi affair, it is a refreshingly chilly spin on familiar supernatural hokum.
This story of a true crime writer (Ethan Hawke) investigating a collection of snuff films he finds in the attic of his new house is elevated significantly by the dementedly creative super 8 death scenes featured throughout.
Hawke sells both the intrigue and later the horror terrifically well, and though antagonist Bughuul occasionally steers the movie into overt silliness, for the most part the atmosphere stays on the right side of creepy-as-hell.
With a few neat twists that cleverly subvert audience expectations and a heart-poundingly intense ending, Sinister is not a movie to watch if you've just recently moved house.
