15 Horror Movies You Really Shouldn't Watch Alone
14. It Follows (2014)
A 100-minute exercise in pure cinematic anxiety, It Follows boasts one of the most provocative and clever premises of any horror movie in recent years.
A teenager (Maika Monroe) is infected with a sexually-transmitted virus, in which the victim is relentlessly pursued by a slow-moving yet murderous supernatural entity, and the only way to rid yourself of the virus is to have sex with someone else. If that person is captured and killed by the force, however, the virus will default back to the previous victim.
David Robert Mitchell's coolly detached direction combines with Disasterpeace's entrancing electronic score and a fantastic performance from Maika Monroe to make this a persistently dread-infused slow-burn horror flick.
It Follows captures a feeling we've all felt but is incredibly difficult to convey on-screen: of being both watched and pursued no matter where you are.
Avoiding easy jump scares in favour of a more pervasive, atmospheric sense of fear, It Follows is a masterfully crafted instant classic.
