The ending to John Carpenter's horror masterpiece The Thing is one of the most brilliantly bleak in all of cinema. Protagonist MacReady (Kurt Russell) stumbles across Childs (Keith David), who claims he got lost in the storm. The two are instantly suspicious that the other might be The Thing, with MacReady confessing the futility of their predicament, attesting "If we've got any surprises for each other, I don't think we're in much shape to do anything about it." "Why don't we just...wait here for a little while, see what happens?" says MacReady, as the two sit opposite one another, sharing a bottle of Scotch and watching the camp burn. Carpenter's superb synth theme kicks in, and we're well aware that likely neither of them will make it off the site alive.
