15 Incredible Films Based On Real-Life Tragedies

11. The Impossible

Hotel Rwanda
Warner Bors./Summit Entertainment

Based On: The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The film is based on the experiences of a Spanish family during the disaster.

The Impossible is a superb survival drama and an excellent representation of one of the worst natural disasters of the 21st century. Not only does it depict the disaster itself in an unbearably terrifying manner, but it also represents the devastating losses it inflicted very effectively.

The film ultimately has a happy ending for the family at the film's center, but it never forgets the hundreds of thousands that died in the disaster. Therefore, despite the initial controversy about replacing the Spanish family with a white family of an unspecified nationality, this is ultimately a very respectful dramatization.

Additionally, it's an extremely well-acted film, with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor (in his best performance since Trainspotting) doing great work. Despite their strong performances, the show is stolen by a pre-Spider-Man Tom Holland, who gives a fantastic child actor performance that was an early hint of how great an actor he is.

Don't be fooled by the 12A rating; The Impossible is an incredibly tough watch that'll leave many viewers in tears. Why the hell wasn't this nominated for Best Picture?
