15 Incredible Films Based On Real-Life Tragedies

10. Munich

Hotel Rwanda
DreamWorks

Based On: The 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre and the aftermath, in which Mossad sent agents on a number of assassination missions against those believed to have been involved.

This is, hands down, Steven Spielberg's most underrated film as well as his best film of the 21st century.

A morally ambiguous, sobering and beautifully made drama, this is also a showcase for the talents of both its excellent cast, especially Eric Bana and Daniel Craig, and Spielberg himself, and although it's nearly three hours long, you're unlikely to notice that too much.

Although Munich is set in the past, it feels highly relevant in this day and age, especially as the Israel-Palestine conflict continues to rage. As a film about the futility of vengeance and aggressive military tactics, it comes across as a reflection of the War on Terror. Thus, despite being a film about history, it is one that echoes our times better than many actual War on Terror dramas have.

It's occasionally slow and boasts one of the most misjudged sex scenes in film history, but other than that, Munich is a superb film and one of the most under-appreciated Best Picture nominees of the noughties.
