14. Rocky Balboa - 16 Years
The Previous Film: Rocky V (1990) The film that got Sylvester Stallone his Oscar nomination, Rocky is such an iconic movie in the film landscape that even people who haven't seen it can ring off the big moments. And while the sequels slowly declined in quality, but they were still a bit of fun. Seeing original director John G. Avildsen return to the series after three Stallone-helmed entries, Rocky V diverted from the typical formula of the series. Contrived an excuse for Rocky to lose his riches it just all out stank. The Late Sequel: Rocky Balboa (2006) Having written all instalments in the series, Stallone had a lot of creative sway on all the Rocky films, but felt the point where Rocky V left it wasn't a worthy conclusion. And so he made Rocky Balboa. But rather than trying to make the sixteen years between films not matter, the age and mental state of the character is the real narrative crux. Was It Worth The Wait? For fans it most certainly was. It succeeded in giving the Rocky a fitting end and was the best out of Stallone's recent throwbacks. And Rocky's legacy lead to healthy box office too.
