15 Incredibly Late Sequels That Took Decades To Arrive

15. The Godfather Part III - 16 Years

The Previous Film: The Godfather Part II (1974) The Godfather Part II, the film that showed the rise of Michael Corleone was only half the story also proved that sequels need not be substandard cash-ins and started the trend of sequels brandishing a number after their title. Like the original it went on to win the Best Picture Oscar and the debate still rages as to which of the first two films is the best. The Late Sequel: The Godfather Part III (1990) Described by series maestro Francis Ford Coppola as the epilogue to the story of the original two films, Part III is the fall of the original's rise. Made only because Coppola wasn't the box office draw he once was (unlike contemporaries Spielberg and Lucas he wasn't embracing the blockbuster, sticking much closer to the values of New Hollywood), the sequel saw Pachino playing a much older Michael involved in a plot that confusingly linked itself to real-world events. Was It Worth The Wait? Garnering some pretty good reviews upon release and getting seven Oscar nominations (no wins), time has given the film a grubbing. It's competently made and Sofia Coppola's acting isn't the movie-destroyer many think it is, but you can't help but wonder how much better it would have been to see the series end as the perfect two-parter.
