15 Indie Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

9. The Blackcoat's Daughter

Ignore the rather generic-looking posters and that horrifically bland title, because The Blackcoat's Daughter is one of the year's most unique horrors, taking an unexpected art-house approach to its familiar subject matter (Catholic school girls + ominous boarding school = creepy), and getting fine work out of its ensemble cast, especially Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka.

Written and directed by Anthony Perkins' son Oz, the film is more abstract than you might be anticipating and certainly doesn't dish easy answers out to the viewer, but it's also surprisingly ambitious and smartly leaves itself open to audience interpretation.

If you crave literal thrills, look elsewhere, but if you're prepared to go on a ride that requires you to actively unpack what you're watching, you shouldn't miss it.
