15 Indie Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

10. A Dark Song

A Dark Song
IFC Midnight

This feature debut from director Liam Gavin may be low on over-the-top thrills and jump scares, but it is a uniquely unsettling horror all the same, as a woman (played by a brilliant Catherine Walker) takes part in a ritual in the hope of avenging her murdered son.

More an emotional horror movie than anything else, A Dark Song digs in deep with protagonist Sophia and doesn't let go for 99 gruelling minutes.

The pacing may be a little painstaking for some, but the uncommonly intimate and quiet engagement with the supernatural, the beautiful cinematography, excellent performances and sheer atmosphere make it well worth a sit.

As long as you're prepared to be patient and can put up with some fairly poor effects work in the final stretch, there's a lot here for genre fans to savour.
