15. Shock: The Academy Loves American Sniper

Consider it a testament to how much respect AMPAS has for Clint Eastwood and how old the majority of the collective's members are that his decent-but-not-great American Sniper landed six nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing & Best Sound Mixing. While the technical nods are somewhat understandable, it's difficult to figure out quite what the Academy's voters were thinking with the Best Picture nomination especially, all the more so when you consider the movies they snubbed for the big award (which will be mentioned momentarily). And though Cooper does good work in the movie, is it really Oscar-worthy? Though the actor has proven himself beyond any expectation in his post-Hangover career, he now has three Oscar nominations (in consecutive years, no less), all of which it can be argued aren't really deserved. And as for the screenplay nomination? There are several films better suited for that fifth spot...
