15. Fountain Of Youth - The Dark Crystal (1982)

For a movie helmed by Jim Henson that€™s full of puppets, The Dark Crystal is about as far away from cheerful Sesame Street as it€™s possible to be. The film is dark, both visually and narratively, and the puppet creatures that inhabit the planet Thra closer resemble the monsters of nightmares than the likes of Elmo. There's no denying that it€™s a great movie, but is it suitable for the demographic that's most likely to watch it? No way. There are muppets, sure, but they€™re different; particularly the bird-like Skeksis, an entire race of evil reptilian dictators; according to their concept designer, €œpart reptile, part predatory bird, and part dragon,€ which apparently results in them looking something like a cross between a genetically-modified bald eagle and the hybrid dinosaur from the new Jurassic Park movie. The most disturbing moment of the film shows the Skeksis using the light of a special Crystal to drain the essence of other creatures into a liquid form that they can consume to restore their youth. Even worse; they keep the near-death corpses hanging on to the threads of existence (with their minds totally blitzed) €“ and use the poor souls as slaves.
