15 Kids Movie Moments That Felt More Like Horror Films

14. The Chokey - Matilda (1996)

Roald Dahl famously wrote gloriously twisted tales for kids. Often the transition to film has only served to heighten the sense of moral ambiguity. Case in point; Danny DeVito€™s 1996 version of Matilda. When you first watch the film you may be tricked into thinking you€™re going to be watching a straightforward pleasant, family adventure. A story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius (as well as have telekinetic powers). who has her dreams come true when she is finally able to attend her first day of school. Then, suddenly, without warning, things take a much darker turn. The film then introduces Miss Trunchbull: a quite blatantly possessed headteacher whose first words are €œFresh meat!€, before she throws an innocent child through the air by her pigtails. This awful woman also has the ultimate claustrophobic torture chamber called €œThe Chokey€ €“ a tiny cupboard filled with spikes €“ which is basically an iron maiden for children. Kids already aren't that fond of school, this didn't help matters much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cguysF7ERqM
