15 Kids Movie Moments That Felt More Like Horror Films
11. The Reveal Of The Grand High Witch - The Witches (1990)
Roald Dahls books always walked the line between fanciful and disturbing, and that was part of the fun of it. The 1971 film version of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory did a pretty good job of balancing the two halves. But, if a director who has a penchant for heady terror is put in charge, its very easy to go from fun and a little scary to mostly scary and hardly any fun. This was the case with the 1990 adaptation of The Witches. Anjelica Huston is absolutely terrifying as the Grand High Witch, an ogre, with skin drooping from her hairy chin, a nose like a hummingbirds beak, and shoulders adorned with what appears to be monstrous scrotums. When she first reveals her monstrous self to a room full of like-minded witches, it truly is a grotesque sight to behold. Channelling fundamental human fears, the Grand High Witch seeks to wipe the planet clean of children - but it is her iconic, horrifying design that really makes her stand out from the pantheon of family movie villains. She is the kind of monster who claws under your skin and simply refuses to leave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrjLNpfDTi0
