The worst-reviewed Best Picture nominee in history, Mervyn LeRoy's costume epic based on Hervey Allen's novel is tough to watch today due to its stodgy pacing and stagey performances, causing most contemporary critics to call the film horribly dated.

Some design aspects undeniably sing and there has been some praise thrown around for Gale Sondergaard, who won the first ever Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance, but it's mostly - and rightly - dismissed as a melodramatic mess these days.

There are many, many good reasons why you probably haven't heard of it.
