15 Maddest Scientists In Movie History
1. Doctor Ian Malcolm (Jurassic Park/The Lost World)
Who could have imagined that the bizarre and idiosyncratic mathematician would have been the voice of reason at the preview of the dinosaur-filled theme park? Sarcastic in personality and trendy in his signature all black wardrobe, Doctor Ian Malcolm is an expert in chaos theory, the study of predictability of sensitive conditions of nature (to put it one way), alerted the creator of Jurassic Park, John Hammond, that his attempt to control species that have been extinct for millennia was an unnatural concept that was doomed to fail...and boy does he hate being right all of the time. All around quirky and odd, Ian Malcolm takes this spot because not only is his field an important aspect of science, his studies of the dissolving dynamics of natural systems based on calculations embodied the themes of Jurassic Park. Hilarious, yet unforgiving, Malcolm explains that no matter how hard we try to prevent it, life will find way. If you have read the novel by Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park, you would know that Malcolm's evidence of Jurassic Park's inevitable failure has some serious and complex support in very detailed descriptions. Portrayed by the fantastic Jeff Goldblum, the actor captured the "I told you so" attitude so well, countering what the character believes to be a lack of appreciation for the power of science by Hammond. To be honest, it is hard to believe anyone else could tackle Ian Malcolm the way Goldblum did, delivering a scientist that is about as weird as they come.
