As if there was ever any doubt, Neil Patrick Harris quickly proved himself to be a sublime Oscar host within his first few minutes on stage. Opening with a line about the Oscars honouring "Hollywood's best and whitest", he then launched into a fun musical number, roping in Anna Kendrick and Jack Black for good measure. In addition, he then landed two killer jokes in quick succession, essentially calling Oprah fat in front of Hollywood's elite and ripping on his own appearance in The Smurfs 2 ("The script read funny"). Admittedly, NPH didn't totally maintain this momentum throughout, with a misguided running gag about his Oscar predictions dragging on far too long and ultimately falling flat. It seemed to be more the fault of the telecast's writers rather than anything Harris did, though a cracking gag about Citizenfour certainly did hit the mark, noting that Edward Snowden couldn't be at the Oscar ceremony "for some treason".
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
