15 Mind-Blowing Facts About Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy
6. Trailers And Posters Had To Be Pulled Because Of 9/11
The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 had an impact on a number of movies, leading to then upcoming releases needing to be reshot or altered in some way. Spider-Man was among those affected, but (outside of changing wide shots) it was really only the movie's marketing campaign that suffered. Spider-Man is more closely associated with New York City than any other superhero, and so it shouldn't really come as a surprise that the iconic Twin Towers were set to play a big role in advertising material. The first teaser trailer for the movie featured an unseen Spidey foiling a bank robbery by trapping a helicopter with his webbing between the two buildings. The poster meanwhile had the towers reflected in his lenses. After the tragedy took place though, Sony were quick to pull any and all material featuring the World Trade Centre and the buildings were digitally removed from the skyline in scenes which had already been shot. However, Spider-Man still found a way of paying tribute to those who lost their lives by inserting a scene featuring Spider-Man hanging onto a flagpole adorned with the American flag. What may seem like an unnecessary patriotic moment was in fact this film's way of paying respect to those who lost their lives.
