15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Hamilton: An American Musical
14. Awards Galore
Of course, Hamilton wasn't just a buzz with audiences. Critics loved it, too, and when the award season came around it was expected to sweep the major award shows. Off-Broadway, it won Best Musical, Actor (Miranda), Actress (Phillipa Soo), Featured Actor (Daveed Diggs), Featured Actress (Renee Elise Goldsperry) and more at the Lucille Lortal Awards. At the Drama Desk Awards, besides actor statues for the main players, Miranda won awards for Best Music, Best Lyrics, and Best Book.
By the time the Broadway run kicked off, Hamilton was a shoe-in to take the Tony Awards by storm, and it certainly did. Breaking a number of records, the show was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, with the possibility of winning 13 (due to multiple actor nominations). In the end, it won 11, one less than the record-holder, The Producers.
Miranda, Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr and Goldsperry all won, with Miranda winning for Best Book, Original Score and Musical. But the vast sea of praise didn't stop there, as the unstoppable Miranda also went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the cast won a Grammy for the soundtrack. All in all, a pretty successful run, and some seriously well-deserved accomplishments.
