15 More Dumb Movies Which Are Secretly Smart

3. Cube

Shrek Forever After
Trimark

The Canadian death-game cult classic Cube is in a similar ballpark to the aforementioned Escape Room - it's easy to write it off as just a fun horror B-Movie, but it's actually a very cleverly done genre film. As well as being a well-executed suspense thriller filled with nerve-wracking traps, the film has an uncommonly smart and well-developed mystery at its center.

Showcasing admirable ambition, the film is full of complicated mathematical puzzles and unexpected twists. It is a film that is constantly tricking both its characters and its audience, and there are few cinematic death games that have ever been harder to escape from. Compared to this stuff, the games in the Saw movies suddenly look fairly straightforward.

The film might be held back a bit by inconsistent acting and dialogue, but it remains one of the most intelligent and well-crafted horror movies of the 90s, and any horror fan who sleeps on it is doing themselves a disservice.
