5. Star Trek Into Darkness
Release Date: May 17th By the time this movie comes out, fans will have been waiting for four years to see what happens next to this new version of Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura and the rest of the Enterprise crew. While there is a small, but vocal minority that held strong opposition to the reboot of 2009, the vast majority of people out there loved the new, fresh, modern take on the classic franchise. I for one, thought Star Trek kicked all kinds of Romulan ass, and liked the alternate timeline idea as a way to strike out on their own and not be beholden to the canon of the franchise many hold as sacrosanct. It was honestly the only way to reboot the franchise - to not make it a note for note remake, which wouldve been boring and unnecessary, and have it stand on its own two legs, allowing everyone to avoid knowing what comes next. We know basically nothing about the sequel, least of all what the title means, and why theres no colon in it. We do know that the original cast is all back, joined by the fantastic Benedict Cumberbatch - who is NOT playing Khan, so lets just stop that thinking already. JJ Abrams is back behind the camera so yes, there will be lens flares, but hes yet to make a movie that didnt royally rock, so lens flares are acceptable until he makes a turd. Dont think this will stink though. The fun in space doesnt end there though...
4. Oblivion
Were into the homestretch - the top 4 are all original science fiction epics from 4 of the most exciting and interesting filmmakers working it the genre today. First off we have Oblivion, the very intriguing next film from the director of Tron: Legacy, Joseph Kosinski. Teaming with the producer of 2011s surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Kosinski has imagined a futuristic, unrecognizable Planet Earth. Tom Cruise headlines the cast, which also includes Olga Kurylenko and Melissa Leo, as Jack Harper, one of the last drone repairmen stationed on Earth, according to the official synopsis. Harper is nearing the end of a long mission, helping extract resources after a decades-long war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs. His character spends his life patrolling the skies, until hes forced to question everything he knows about the world, and his life, after he comes into contact with a beautiful stranger when her spacecraft crashes. Ive heard about a few other details that could definitely be considered spoilers, so Ill refrain from typing those up. Google is your friend though, if you really want to find out more. I for one, feel like this is the kind of movie where the less you know going in, the more enjoyable it will be. Lets just hope they market it right, and leave some secrets unshown.
