3. Pacific Rim
Release Date: July 12th I could go into greater depth, but all I really need to say is: Giant sea monsters vs Giant robots, mentally controlled by two trained pilots, including Charlie Hunnam & Rinko Kikuchi. Oh yeah, and its directed by everyones favorite modern monster guy, Guillermo del Toro, so theres that. You still need more? It also stars Idris Elba, and Charlie Day.
2. Elysium
Release Date: August 9th Another highly anticipated film from a director that made a surprise hit movie in 2009 (the other being JJ Abrams/Star Trek). Neill Blomkamp captured everyones attention when District 9 came from out of nowhere and surprised the hell out of almost everyone. The only ones who werent totally surprised were those of us whod seen his amazing short film Alive in Joburg. (Seriously though, if you havent seen that short, do it as soon as youre done reading this article. Its what got Peter Jacksons attention when he was searching for Halo directors.) For his highly anticipated follow-up to D9, Blomkamp is staying high-concept and jumping to the future - 2159 to be exact. Its a future where Earth is more or less ruined, and the very wealthy live on a space station called Elysium, while the rest of humanity eeks out what they can on the surface. Matt Damon stars as a man whos fed up with the status quo, and set out on a mission to bring equality to the polarized worlds. (Official synopsis) Jodie Foster co-stars as a bureaucrat who will stop at nothing to keep the riff-raff out of Elysium, while Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner and Alice Braga round out the terrific cast. To recap: The director of District 9, the same release weekend, another original sci-fi film, loads of potential for social commentary (immigration being the obvious one) and the near-complete lack of details leaked at this point, all contribute to this landing at number two on this list. Whats number one? Do you remember the clue from the beginning of the article? No? Oh well, just click next already.
