3. Caesar Drops Koba - Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Who Dies?: The rival for Caesar's (Andy Serkis) claim to ape leadership, Koba (Toby Kebbell). Method of Death: Falling hundreds of feet after being dropped by Caesar. Why It's Awesome: Because Koba's death reflects the entire thematic basis of the film. Throughout, it's established that the apes have the rule "ape shall not kill ape", one that most of the apes, especially Caesar, take incredibly seriously. Once Koba begins killing humans and apes alike (as well as trying to assassinate Caesar), however, Caesar makes an executive decision to allow Caesar to drop to his death for the good of the community, and few can argue with that. Following their fight, Caesar at first appears to show mercy on Koba, but tells him, "You are not ape", before dropping him, at which point he lands awkwardly on a steel cable and smacks on a giant metal platform, which itself falls to the ground. There is one slight issue with this entry, however, in that a post-credit noise of an ape emerging from rubble implies that Koba has lived to fight another day, and as such might appear in the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes. Hopefully, however, this will be a tease and nothing more, because if Koba has survived, it will somewhat undermine the emotional gravity of Caesar's decision to kill Koba, which was really the entire point of the movie.
