15 Most Awesome Explosions In Movie History

2. Mad Max: Fury Road

Trust a grandpa-aged George Miller to thoroughly shame his action filmmaker contemporaries with the face-melting masterpiece that is Mad Max: Fury Road.

Though the film is often praised as a marvel of practical effects, Fury Road does in fact feature a large amount of CGI, yet an above-the-odds effort was clearly made to make the seams as tough-to-spot as possible.

This is especially true during the tanker explosion sequence that left everybody slack-jawed, because what more could you possibly want out of a Mad Max movie than Tom Hardy being catapulted around on a giant pogo stick while a huge lorry gets lit up in the background?

The explosion itself was actually enhanced with CGI and many of the foreground elements were shot separately and integrated in post-production, but the end result is so damn brilliant you'd never really guess.
