15 Most Awesome Explosions In Movie History

8. Dredd

Dredd Explosion

Though 2012's Dredd was produced for less than half the budget of the atrocious 1995 Sylvester Stallone version, it sure as hell didn't leave audiences wanting for stylish action.

One of the film's most memorable beats occurs when Dredd (Karl Urban) and Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) breach a drug den by planting an explosive on the door.

The sequence plays out in glorious slow motion, reflecting the perception-slowing effects of the movie's focal drug Slo-Mo, and allowing audiences to savour the devastating power of the explosive shockwave.

The explosion catapults a shotgun-totting druggie across the room, just before Dredd enters the room and wipes out all the armed goons.

It's a gorgeous sequence and persuasive proof of what can be achieved when you hand a budgetarily-constrained action movie to actual artists.
