And now for an explosion of a very different kind, and one in a Best Picture-nominated movie no less.

Steven Spielberg's suspense classic Jaws famously concludes with Brody (Roy Scheider) forcing a pressurized scuba tank into the shark's mouth and shooting it, causing both to explode and finally bringing the animal's reign of terror to an end.

While it may be smaller-scale than most of the explosions on this list, it's nevertheless a stonking payoff to two hours of white-knuckle tension. Brody's bada**, "Smile, you son of a..." and the subsequent bloody explosion is nothing short of pure movie magic.
