7. The Magnificent Seven

The Fellowship Of The Ring
United Artists

The American remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (more on that later) shifted the narrative to the Western genre and kept many of the same plot points, with the cast absolutely loaded with star power and director John Sturges delivering some of the best gunfights ever seen in the genre.

The titular seven is packed with cool, charismatic and rugged personalities, which comes as no surprise when they count Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Steven McQueen, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn amongst their number. Hired to protect a small Mexican village from a posse of bandits led by Eli Wallach, the Magnificent Seven prepare for battle.

One of the classics of the genre, its doubtful that the movie would be half as well-remembered if it wasn't for the talent assembled, adding both gravitas and name recognition to a relatively straightforward story. Packed with plenty of character moments along with some impeccably-staged shootouts that still hold up today, 2017's upcoming remake will struggle to match the original in the bad-assery department, despite having Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt amongst the cast.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
