15 Most Controversial Films Of The Decade (So Far)
4. Exodus: Gods And Kings
What's It About? Whereas Darren Aronofsky took the Biblical story of Noah's Ark for his movie, Noah, Ridley Scott took on the task of bringing the story of Moses to the big screen with Exodus: Gods And Kings, starring Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Edgerton as Ramesses II and a young boy as the personification of God. Why Was It Controversial? Depicting God as a precocious young boy might have made a lot of people laugh but it certainly offended some Christian groups, who also took objection to some of the other Biblical inaccuracies found in Exodus: Gods And Kings (the Egyptian government went so far as to ban the movie entirely on these grounds). As with Noah, the almost all-white cast proved to be another source of controversy - Scott responded pointing out a purely economical reason for the casting decisions: I cant mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such. Im just not going to get it financed. So the question doesnt even come up.
