15 Most Controversial Films Of The Decade (So Far)

3. Blue Is The Warmest Colour

What's It About? Fifteen-year-old Adèle (played by Adèle Exarchopolous) discovers her sexuality in Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Abdel Kechiche's drama which sees Adèle becoming involved with a mysterious blue-haired woman after an unsettling sexual experience with a male classmate. Unfolding as part coming-of-age drama and part character study playing out over a period of ten years, the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. Why Was It Controversial? Another film on this list to have stood out from the crowd on account of its unsimulated sex scenes - this time of the lesbian variety - Blue Is The Warmest Colour was beset with controversy from early on, primarily from feminist advocacy groups who saw the lingering sexual encounters as more about fulfilling the male wish fulfilment of the director than revealing anything honest about lesbian relationships. Things heated up even more when the lead actress spoke about the "horrible" experience of filming, sparking a war of words between herself and Kechiche.
