13. The Final Twist - Us
Jordan Peele has very quickly built himself a reputation as a spectacular director in the world of horror movies. His debut Get Out was followed up in 2019 by Us, a terrifying piece about an army of evil doppelgangers living underground in a maze of abandoned tunnels.
What the movie is most memorable for however, is the shocking twist at the end. Lupita Nyong'o plays both Adelaide and her tethered double, Red. The latter has gathered the rest of the tethered to rise up and fight against the world above them, only she isn't what we think.
A flashback to the carnival from her childhood reveals that Adelaide is, in fact, the real tethered, and that she attacked her double, taking her life away and forcing her to live underground for the next 23 years. This twist is a real shock, and something that makes the movie completely different upon second viewing with the knowledge of who she really is.
