One of the best romantic comedies of recent memory, I was lucky enough to see this film during an American visit and have been desperate for an official UK release ever since. It's unlikely to have major distribution, so desperately check this one out if you get the chance to.

Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine (two future mega stars if this film is any indication) play two friends who have known each other for years and are faced with the prospect of having to attend multiple weddings over the course of the year. They are both at the stages of their lives where high school and college friends are settling down and getting married, and their older relatives have found another person that they're willing to risk it all to be with. As you might have expected, they team up to be each other's dates and gradually form a romantic connection as the year continues.

What Plus One fundamentally gets right is focusing almost entirely on the chemistry that Quaid and Erskine share, watching their relationship gradually shift from bantering friends, to intoxicated lovers, to people struggling in a partnership they weren't completely prepared for.

They're given plenty of breathing room to grow in each other's presence and the film is bereft of detrimental subplots. While it does follow a traditional template, the honesty it shows in crafting a modern relationship offer a refreshing and contemporary take on the genre, and it excels at everything it attempts to.
