The Call of the Wild, currently, seems to be most known for being the Harrison Ford CGI dog flick. A film where they didn't bother getting real dogs to film and have just created one from scratch, with the content itself seeming like the definitive middle-of-February release: it's designed towards families, has a huge movie star and is centred through the dog's perspective.

On the surface, it's easy to see why many adult audiences are skeptical. Thankfully the visual effects for the dog itself (Buck) look fantastic. It's good that real dogs don't have to work in the snow as well! Keep their little paws warm.

Aside from the strange dog discourse, the film might not look like something that particularly pushes the buttons of what contemporary cinema is capable of, but it looks like a warm and wholesome experience. The focus on a dog adapting to a new environment away from suburbia wouldn't be particularly tantalising if it wasn't for the gorgeous Alaskan period setting,. Furthermore, one of the greatest actors in the world at playing reluctantly-loving grumps Harrison Ford is the main human on screen, and the prospect of Ford hanging out with a dog buddy while overcoming the environment sounds like a lot of fun.

It's easy to be mocking of films like this but there's a need for cinema that kids and grans can like in equal measure, it won't change the world but if the elements come together, it should be an exceedingly pleasurable time and a perfect way to say goodbye to this winter season.
