12. Let The Right One In

What's it about? Tomas Alfredson's Swedish (un)horror film centres around a young boy called Oskar who is regularly bullied by his classmates at school. One evening he encounters what appears to be a girl of his own age, Eli, and the two soon form a close friendship. Before long Oskar discovers that Eli isn't who she at first appeared to be. What makes it groundbreaking? With a lack of familiarity with the horror genre Alfredson's genius was in crafting a genre pic which completely ignored the rules - Let The Right One In might seem like it's about vampires but on closer examination it's clear that this is a film about humans and the way in which they connect. Watch it back to back with the US remake and the way in which it transcends horror conventions couldn't be more apparent.
