15 Most Insultingly Bad Sequels To Great Movies
13. Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008)
Critics were surprisingly kind to the fourth Indiana Jones movie, which while nowhere near as inept as pretty much every other movie on this list, is nevertheless a soul-destroyingly bad follow-up to the three classic Indiana Jones movies.
Harrison Ford's surprisingly spry here and certainly game for the task, but David Koepp's script abjectly fails to live up to what came before, settling for forgettable dialogue, an ill-advised premise centred on aliens, set-pieces that feel absurd even for this franchise (nuking the fridge!), and the introduction of Indy's son Mutt (played by an irritating Shia LaBeouf).
Even Spielberg's direction is pretty workmanlike and forgettable, largely thanks to an overuse of CGI that makes the film look rather blurry and ugly compared to its predecessors.
While fandom may have blown the film's poor quality ever-so-slightly out of proportion, it is an unmistakable low-point of both the Indy series and Spielberg's career.
