Paul Verhoeven's 1997 war satire is a veritable cult classic and perhaps one of the most under-appreciated movies of the late-90s, but its straight-to-video 2004 sequel? Horrid.

You know a movie's bad when it leaves you decrying the absence of Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards, but they're just two of the many missing pieces from this utterly rancid, cheapo cash-grab sequel.

The gleeful satire, brutal violence and cheeseball charm are all completely stripped away in favour of a bland B-movie with flat characters, atrocious writing and hilariously bad CGI (all the more embarrassing as it's directed by Star Wars and Jurassic Park special effects maestro Phil Tippett).

At least the 2008 sequel, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, feels closer in step with the original and brings Casper Van Dien back, rough around the edges though it still is.
