2. I. Y. Yunioshi (Mickey Rooney) - Breakfast At Tiffany's
The Character: Holly's (Audrey Hepburn) Japanese neighbour, a photographer who has somewhat creepy designs on Holly. Why He's Offensive: For starters, the Asian character is played by the very white Mickey Rooney, who has gone under a severe transformation to play the character, having his eyelids taped, his hair slicked back and getting buck teeth for added measure. This, combined with an extremely stereotypical accent makes him little more than a lazy, racist caricature, and the portrayal has unsurprisingly sparked outrage over the years. Both director Blake Edwards and Rooney later expressed regret for the casting of the role, as they genuinely didn't seem to believe that they were being racist. Does He Ruin The Movie?: No, but it casts a very long shadow over an otherwise exuberant and lightly entertaining film. Considering how unimportant Yunioshi is in the overall plot, his role could easily have been shed in editing, and if someone hasn't done it already, there needs to be a fan edit with Rooney's role totally removed. It's also worth commenting that, had the role been played by an Asian actor, it would likely still come across as racist, just as more of the Long Duk Dong variety...
