David Fincher's Mank performed brilliantly on the awards circuit and was acclaimed by critics, but audiences were a lot more reserved about it. No surprises there.

What's the story of Mank? Well, there isn't one. Not really. We were sold a film about the making of Citizen Kane, but the film ultimately settles for giving us two-and-a-half hours of old Hollywood recreations, emotionless dialogue and Gary Oldman getting drunk without providing compelling characters or any proper narrative through-line.

In fairness, its strong period detail, fantastic technical values - especially that exquisite cinematography - and the stellar acting performances (particularly from Amanda Seyfried, who continues to get better and better with each passing year) are enough to keep this movie from being bad.

But at the same time, all those glowing critical reviews and ten Oscar nominations (the most of the ceremony) feel wildly over-generous for such a self-indulgent, emotionally distant movie. By far and away, this is the worst film from 2021's otherwise excellent Best Picture line-up, as well as one of the least essential films in David Fincher's filmography.

An Underrated Alternative: Quo Vadis, Aida? (2020) - A devastating account of the Srebrenica Genocide that did manage to get a Best Foreign Language Feature nomination at the 2021 Oscars, but remains under-seen.
