15 Most Overrated Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

9. Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher Steve Carell
Sony Pictures Classics

Haven't seen Foxcatcher and want to save the price of a movie ticket? Head to John du Pont's Wikipedia page, read that, and you'll have got the exact same experience as sitting through Bennett Miller's distant true life drama.

The battle for Mark Schultz's sanity is a fascinating one and Miller, who managed to turn the mathematicisation of baseball into one of the best sports films of the decade with Moneyball, seemed like the perfect man to bring the complex, off-kilter story to life. With a collection of great actors (most notably Steve Carrell in an against type serious role) working at the top of their game to deliver subtle, human performances, it had all the makings of a haunting psychological drama.

And yet, it doesn't come together. The film is shot with a mostly chilly distance which, when coupled with the internal acting, makes getting invested in the events hard and gaining anything more than a news-style insight to the unstable du Pont impossible.

The film had an obscene amount of buzz coming out of its premiere at Cannes last year, which only served to make the missing of the target all the more disappointing. That it failed to capitalise on the early awards buzz suggests that some people did cotton on to the movie's emptiness.
