9. The Matrix - There Must Be Something In That Code

The Wachowskis' 1999 cyberpunk masterpiece The Matrix is considered to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, and not without reason.

It contains elements of '90s hacker culture, a sort of neo-goth fashion sense, martial arts and action movie set pieces, meaning that it has a little something for almost everyone.

The crawling green code has become iconic, and it's hard to see it without thinking of the virtual reality world in which much of The Matrix takes place.

Upon the film's release on home media, fans were eager to sink their teeth into attempting to decipher the code, assuming that there must be a hidden message inside; whether in the form of an Easter egg, a hidden message, or even further insight into the world of The Matrix.

It has since come to light that they weren't entirely wrong.

Production designer Simon Whiteley has since explained that when tasked with designing the "digital rain", he simply scanned the characters from his wife's Japanese cookbooks.

It may seem like an anticlimax for anyone who spent hours poring over the green text, but The Matrix is actually made up of sushi recipes.
