15 Most Profitable Movies Of All Time

6. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

When George Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney, fans knew it was only a matter of time before the House of Mouse began churning out movies. The first to come out was a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi, and it would be reasonable to say that the worldwide anticipation was palpable.

It had been years since the last Star Wars feature film release, so when the first trailer for The Force Awakens was dropped, the fans went crazy. There was no way that the movie could possibly lose money, and it seemed Disney made an incredibly wise investment.

The Sequal Trilogy has been released, and while each of the movies made a ton of money, none did as well as The Force Awakens. There was no online anger over Luke's death yet, and nobody could complain about the fact that Rey was a Palpatine — it was all too new.

The Force Awakens wasn't cheap. The movie cost more than $336 million in production costs alone, and while it would make sense that those costs would significantly reduce the profit, they didn't. After pulling in an adjusted gross of $2.270 billion, Disney was left with an estimated profit of around $923.86 million.
