The Controversy: After black Disney channel star Zendaya was cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming in an unspecified role, rumours began to spread that she'd be playing a contemporary riff on Mary Jane Watson.

Naturally the news brought out the usual cavalcade of racists who decried the news, while making absurd statements like, "So can a white guy play Martin Luther King now?"

Why It's Ridiculous: For starters, it turned out in the end that Zendaya isn't even playing Mary Jane, but rather one of Peter's classmates called Michelle.

Even so, taking the outrage at face value, there's a reason why a white guy shouldn't play MLK, because King's blackness is integral to who he is and what he stands for. Conversely, there's not much that dictates MJ has to be white.
