15 Most Terrifying Sci-Fi Movie Scenes Ever
6. Sunshine - Discovering Pinbacker
Danny Boyle’s Sunshine seems to have been forgotten about a bit in recent years, which is surprising when you consider the star-studded cast that includes the likes of Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans and Michelle Yeoh to name a few.
For the majority of the film it’s a straightforward story with the majority of the problems begging caused for a variety of natural reasons, (well natural when your flying directly into the sun) but then the film shifts a reveals a terrifying villain that hunts down the crew of the Icarus 2.
Mark Strong’s character, Pinbacker, is the captain and only surviving member of the Icarus 1, who has been driven insane by constant exposure to the suns radiation since being adrift in space. When we finally meet him in the flesh, well, severely burnt flesh, he is only visible as a faint and distorted shadow shifting across the blazing sun.
As Capa (Cillian Murphy) draws closer, we are given a sudden close up of his snarling face, as he brutally slashes Capa across the chest. The lack of clarity then returns when Pinbacker chases Capa back into the main body of the ship. He is constantly shot out of focus and blurred from view, and it is this, that heightens the terror of the scene.
By hiding the extent of Pinbacker’s changes, the audience is left constantly on edge, and are never sure what he’s become, playing on the most primal of fears, not knowing.
