15 Most Terrifying Sci-Fi Movie Scenes Ever
8. Event Horizon – Visions Of Hell
It should be no surprise that this film is full of terrifying and gruesome scenes, as it is essentially about a spaceship that acts as a gateway to hell. It’s hard to pick just one, as there really are so many, but arguably the most horrific comes right near the end involving a possessed Doctor Weir (Sam Neil).
While Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) tries to prevent the Event Horizon’s gateway from opening, he’s ambushed by the nightmare of a former crewmember who died in a fire. As flames start to engulf the engine room, the nightmare morphs into Doctor Weir who only moments before was sucked out into the vacuum of space.
Weir is covered in raw bloody gashes, and after his reveal, he is only shown in extreme close ups, making the cuts even more grotesque and his eyes appear more piercing. Weir easily overpowers Miller and throws him to the ground, wrenching his head back. Weir then forces thousands of disgusting and terrifying images through Miller’s head.
The images flashes rapidly across the screen showing all kinds of disgusting acts of torture being committed towards Miller’s crew, the worst of which are only on screen for a single frame. The visions may only be on screen for a short amount of time, but they're just so disturbing and brutal that you can’t help but recoil in terror. What’s even worse, is Weir’s apparent delight and invulnerability, as it makes the horrific visions seem almost inevitable.
